Why UX?

After freelancing in a digital design agency I became intrigued with UX Design.

I trained in Industrial Design and then spent years designing and writing sewing patterns.
I thought it was the perfect time to pivot into a new stream of human-centred-design.

The balance of user needs with business goals feels like a wonderful fit for my personal attributes and experience.
I have discovered that I enjoy the research, particularly the interviews, most of all.

I’m a pragmatic problem-solver. I know that completing the whole “double diamond” UX process isn’t going to happen for every job, but I’m keen to get as much done as possible with the resources available.

I’m a quick learner, interested in learning about new domains (my client’s businesses).

I love to collaborate. As a designer I know and trust the power of working in a team, especially one made up of people with different backgrounds and different roles.

I’m analytical, I like to break things down to understand them, and I like to keep bringing myself back to the “Why”.
Why are we doing this, what is the goal?
Who are we trying to do it for?

Talking to people is my superpower - I’m genuinely interested and I think it shows. I’m curious about their behaviour, challenges, decision making and lives in general. My empathy allows me to ask better questions and uncover deeper insights.

I’m a strong communicator. I am great at explaining things; in person, in writing and through visuals. In my previous career I have taught classes, and created lots of instructional content (class notes and patterns) and regular feedback was that I created the clearest instructions to follow.

My Degree

I loved studying Industrial Design. It combined my creativity and desire to make things, with my curiosity about how things work, and my desire to problem solve.

My honours project was about personalisation and wearable tech.
I felt very strongly that products would increasingly be designed to be personalised.

These interests all align well with UX design, which centres the user at the heart of everything. I feel that Industrial Design was the birthplace of UX, and one has set me up perfectly for the practice of the other.

My Sewing Pattern Business

I designed sewing patterns for the craft industry.

I had an international distributor and my patterns were sold in independent patchwork and quilting stores all over the world.
I designed each item, did the sewing, wrote the instructions, drew the diagrams, shot the photos, put everything together for printing, ran my blog and social media, taught workshops, attended trade shows and wrote for national magazines.

I executed a content strategy that saw Matching Pegs website grow from zero to 18,000 visitors a month at its peak.

I also designed brand identity for other small businesses. These years taught me a lot about content strategy and marketing. I did a lot of different types of writing, from procedural/technical writing, through to copy to entice interaction on social media.

I sold out the cushion stuffing in an IKEA!

Several tutorials that I created are still widely shared on Pinterest, nearly 10 years later.
One in particular is very popular around the world.
5 years after I made that tutorial, it managed to sell out the cushion stuffing in a German IKEA, when my craft tutorial became super popular there!
